of space, places that trigger the remembrance of unlived pasts, and the ideological charge behind supposed neutrality of landscape.
The works often depict uninhabited places marked by decay– empty barns, warehouses, factory ruins covered in vegetation, abandoned vehicles, junkyards- and evoke a strange atmosphere, a tension between familiar and alien. The uncanny element of the landscapes speaks of two paths of inquiry: one general and global, and the other specific and rooted in post-socialist identity. On a broader level, the imagery tackles what Sigmund Freud called ‘the return of the repressed’ – latent experiences never lived, but psychologically inherited. The landscapes trigger not individual memories, but intergenerational anxieties and myths. This leads into the investigation of the cultural and historical background of the artist, as she confronts ominous ruins and abandoned spaces with spectral remains of the communist past, while addressing elements relating to post-memory in Eastern European societies.
The artist engages with the lineage of pictorial tradition by pushing the conventions of oil painting to create disquieting environments where illusion becomes a critical tool. The medium is employed in a manner that creates illusionistic voids, allowing the spatial, temporal or psychological distance to be materialized, as discussed by E.H. Gombrich in Art and Illusion. Painting becomes a philosophical act through which absence takes shape, through which thought becomes embodied into matter.
